Well, it’s February of 2007 and obviously I haven’t done a good job updating the blog, so let me give you the skinny.

I still have the Mercedes and it still runs well. I’m on my 3rd Veg oil filter and have probably gone 1500-1800 miles so far. I’m really happy with this conversion and love free fuel and being one of the cleanest cars on the road.

I recently purchase a diesel Ford Excursion and plan to start the conversion process this weekend. The kit I purchase is from Golden Fuel Systems and uses the stock fuel tank for oil and came with an aux 24 gallon tank for diesel. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same idea as the Greasecar kit. Heat the oil up, use a switching valve and run on grease. I guess they’re pretty much all like that.

That’s it for now. I plan on keeping the Mercedes until I’m done with the conversion, then it’s going on ebay. After that, I will replace my wife’s gas van with a smaller diesel, probably from the VW family and convert that. I’ll try to keep this blog a little better updated with progress on the Excursion.

Hey, I found your site through google. I have a 2002 Excursion that I’m going to convert. I too want to buy the Golden Fuel X system, but not sure the details of the conversion. Like does the tank heat exchanger heat the whole tank? And is this an issue with a poly tank?

Anyways, did you convert your X and how did it go? Was it an easy conversion with Golden Fuel’s system? Any problems so far? And have you found cheaper replacement filters for the Racor filters?

So I guess I have a lot of questions about their system. Anyways, feel free to email me with any tips, etc.-

David,
I have a poly tank and it seems to work fine with the heater. It doesn’t do a good job of heating the oil to the correct temperature though. I think just the distance alone prevents the coolant from doing a good job.

I finished the actual conversion a couple months back. It was a pretty long process. I had to run to the store for various pieces of hardware not included with the kit. I had to modify the pieces that came with the kit, like cut a hole in the aux fuel tank they sent me, since the manufacturer did not, and just little things like that.

I also had to read the instructions about a million times, becuase they weren’t clear, or were just wrong. And I had converted a WVO vehicle before. I have since sent them the items I thought could be improved, but not heard back from them. If you do decide to go with them, make sure you have a repair manual handy, like Chilton’s.

I have not had to replace any filters yet, so haven’t found a cheaper alternative.

Overall, I wasn’t impressed with the GFS kit. In addition to the other problems I mentioned, I don’t think the system is designed to provide enough heat. I’m in the process of adding a second additional heating source. So I have two other devices heating the oil, after the GFS kit. If you can afford it, I’d look at the Frybrid system. I hear good things about them.
If you can afford the time without your vehicle, and are up to making on the fly modifications to both your vehicle and the kit, you could go with GFS, but be prepared to add more heating, depending on the climate in which you live. I’m in Chicago, so need the extra heat.

Hope that answers some of your questions. Let me know if you need more info about anything specific.
